Add-ons and booking extras

Letting customers bolt extras onto a service, and why doing so can make available times disappear.

Add-ons — shown as booking extras — let a customer bolt something onto a service while booking. A treatment on top of a cut, a longer massage, a finish upgrade. Each one adds its own time and its own price.

What add-ons are

An add-on belongs to a service. The customer picks the service first, then chooses any extras offered with it. The appointment that results is the service plus every extra they picked — both in duration and in price.

They are a better fit than separate services when the extra never happens on its own. If someone could book it by itself, make it a service instead.

Setting one up

Open Services, choose the service, and add a booking extra.

SettingWhat it does
Extra nameWhat the customer sees beside the tick box.
Extra duration (minutes)Added to the appointment length. Set 0 for something that takes no extra time but costs more.
Extra priceAdded to the total shown to the customer.
ActiveInactive extras stop being offered. Appointments already booked with one keep their time and price.

How add-ons change availability

This is the part that surprises people. Because an add-on extends the appointment, a slot that fits the service may not fit the service plus extras. Tick a 30-minute add-on and some of the times that were available a moment ago disappear.

That is correct behaviour — the longer appointment genuinely does not fit — but it looks like a glitch if you are not expecting it. It is also a common reason a customer reports “times vanished while I was booking”.

Long add-ons on a full day

An add-on longer than about 30 minutes can leave very few bookable times on a busy week. If an extra is routinely taken, consider making it a distinct service with a realistic duration instead. See Why a time slot isn't showing to customers.
